Language Instruction for Newcomers Programs
A non-profit community-based organization that is committed in addressing the immigration, integration, education, health, housing, social service, culture, and economic development needs of Somali Canadians and other immigrants in Canada through programs, service and advocacy.
SIAO provides language training and skills development that supports clients to attain the English proficiency they need to function and participate in all aspect of Canadian society and the economy. The program offers a critical pathway for a successful life while building newcomers self-confidence and motivation to face all challenges as newcomers pursue their goals.
The program is designed to teach Adult newcomers who reside in Toronto to learn basic English language instruction and engage in social, cultural and economic integration into Canadian society.
The LINC program has allowed newcomer clients to developed and learn the vocabulary and language necessary to do everyday task such as grocery shopping, going to the doctor, renting an apartment, customs and social behaviours, understanding Canadian laws and learning about the community resources that are available to them in Canada.
LINC Levels offered include:
Literacy – suitable for adult learners with little to no literacy skills in their first language. Learners are taught reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
Level 1/2 – covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. These four skills are covered in order for learners to advance to the next LINC level. Computer classes are held twice a week and learners have the opportunity to develop computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office and some online learning websites.
Level 3-6 – students improve their language abilities in the four skill areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking
